In the heart of southern France, in a small village called Lasquenet, in 1960, Vianne Rocher, a woman with unconventional views on life, arrives along with her young daughter Anouk, opening a new chocolate shop. This simple act is however the beginning of a great conflict that will change the lives of the villagers.
One of Vianne's main adversaries is the village mayor, Comte de Reynaud, who believes that the chocolate shop is a dangerous place where "devilish atmosphere" reigns. In his fight against Vianne, Comte uses various means, from trying to entangle the priest in the issue of "devilish practices" at the church, to organizing a group boycott of the shop and its owner. Meanwhile, Vianne, who is a woman with a strong vision and determination, refuses to give up, standing in defense of her shop and her freedom of expression.
One of the main themes of this film is the struggle for freedom and individuality. Vianne, who is a woman with unconventional views, does not want to surrender to societal pressure and tries to live her life as she sees fit.
