Review of: The Horizon
Among the classic thrillers of the 1950s, “The Possession” (original title: “Les Diaboliques”) stands out due to its atmosphere and the way it tells a story full of tension and surprises. Director Henri-Georges Clouzot created a work that is still considered one of the greatest thrillers of all time.
About The Possession
“The Possession” is a story taking place in a boarding school for boys, where director Michel Delasalle terrorizes students, teachers, and his wife Christine. Despite being the owner of the school, Christine has to endure public humiliation and tolerate numerous lovers of her husband. One of them is Nicole, a teacher who was exploited by Michel and abandoned. Both women plan a sweet revenge that leads to unexpected consequences.
Acting and direction
Henri-Georges Clouzot shows mastery in directing actors, while Simone Signoret and Vera Clouzot deliver outstanding performances as Nicole and Christine in a way that is simply convincing. Their chemistry on screen is unbeatable, and the way Clouzot guides them through their roles is nothing short of masterful.
Visual design and music
The visual design is straightforward but effective. Black-and-white shots add to the film’s atmosphere, while the background music emphasizes tension. All this together creates an incredibly engaging experience.
