Review: Paths of Glory

“Paths of Glory” is a film that grabs the viewer from its first scenes into the world of World War I, where cruelty and senseless death are on a daily basis. Director Stanley Kubrick presented us with a story that is both a warning and a commentary on war and its consequences. The film, based on the novel “Paths of Glory,” is an excellent example of how to tell a story that is both haunting and moving.

What is “Paths of Glory”?

The story takes place in 1916 during World War I. General George Broulard pressures General Paul Mireau into attacking German positions on Ant Hill, promising him a promotion. However, when the attack fails, General Mireau blames his soldiers for cowardice, accusing them of being lazy. Lieutenant Dax becomes the defender of three soldiers who are accused of cowardice.

Acting and direction

Kirk Douglas in the role of Lieutenant Dax is absolutely phenomenal. His acting is full of emotion and depth, and his character is perfectly developed. Director Stanley Kubrick’s work is also worthy of praise. Kubrick can create an atmosphere that is both tense and moving.

Visuals and music

The film’s visuals are excellent. The black-and-white shots add a unique atmosphere to the film. The sound track is also great, with Gerald Fried’s music perfectly suited to the mood of the film.
