In August 2011, Madrid is on edge as it prepares for the visit of Pope Benedict XVI. Luis Velarde and Alfaro, two detectives, are forced to investigate the elderly woman's murder. Luis, a solitary man who exercises his vocal skills to reduce his stuttering, and Alfaro, a happily married but often brutally forceful man, must put aside their differences to solve this dark case. Their paths cross with other characters struggling with their own demons. Among them is Luisa, the wife of one of them, whose infertility leads to the breakdown of her marriage.
